ASC 430

Deferred Revenue
Governs deferred revenue (unearned revenue) recognition; largely superseded by ASC 606's contract liability model for most entities.
1
Overview
The legacy Topic for unearned revenue – now largely obsolete
ASC 430 governs the recognition, measurement, and disclosure of DEFERRED REVENUE (also called unearned revenue) – cash received from customers BEFORE the entity has satisfied its performance obligations. Originally issued in 1975, the Topic established that deferred revenue is a LIABILITY representing the entity's remaining performance obligation, recognised when the related earnings process is complete. For decades, this was the primary GAAP governing advance payments, service contracts, and similar arrangements.

ASC 606 Superseding Effect
ASC 606 replaced virtually all of ASC 430's substantive guidance
ASC 606, Revenue from Contracts with Customers (effective for public entities for annual periods beginning after December 15, 2017), SUPERSEDED virtually all of ASC 430's substantive recognition and measurement guidance. Under ASC 606, advance payments from customers are treated as CONTRACT LIABILITIES within the five-step revenue recognition model (Step 2: Identify performance obligations → Step 5: Recognise revenue as obligations are satisfied → the remaining unsatisfied obligation at a reporting date is recognised as a contract liability, equivalent in substance to what ASC 430 called deferred revenue). ASC 430 is retained in the Codification primarily for historical reference, periods before ASC 606 adoption, and narrow circumstances not within ASC 606's scope – it is no longer the primary revenue deferral standard.

Disclosure Requirements
What survives from ASC 430
For periods where ASC 430 still applies (pre-ASC 606 comparative periods, or transactions outside ASC 606 scope), ASC 430 requires: (a) the AMOUNT of deferred revenue at the balance sheet date, (b) an explanation of the NATURE of the transactions giving rise to deferred revenue (e.g. service contracts, membership dues, licensing arrangements), and (c) the EXPECTED TIMING of revenue recognition (when the deferred revenue is expected to be earned). In practice, entities that have fully adopted ASC 606 now disclose contract liabilities (and the opening/closing balance of performance obligations) under ASC 606's far more detailed disclosure requirements (Topic 606-50), which effectively subsume what ASC 430 once required.
