1
Conceptual Framework Linkage
Ensuring cumulative comprehensive income eventually flows through profit or loss in full
JMIS Modification Accounting Standard No. 2 requires that ALL items of OTHER COMPREHENSIVE INCOME (OCI) be EVENTUALLY reclassified ("RECYCLED") to PROFIT OR LOSS upon derecognition or settlement – CLOSING OFF a specific IFRS OPTION that would otherwise permit CERTAIN OCI gains/losses to bypass the Statement of Income PERMANENTLY, never touching reported profit or loss AT ALL.
2
The Second (and Final) JMIS Modification
Completing the pair, alongside the goodwill modification
JMIS comprises IFRS Standards ENDORSED as issued by the IASB, SUBJECT to EXACTLY two ASBJ modifications – THIS one, addressing OTHER COMPREHENSIVE INCOME, and JMIS Modification No. 1 (Accounting for Goodwill – see the companion poster). TOGETHER, these TWO modifications represent the ENTIRE set of departures JMIS makes from UNMODIFIED international IFRS.
3
Scope of This Modification
Companies electing to apply JMIS for consolidated statements
This modification applies to LISTED companies ELECTING JMIS for their CONSOLIDATED financial statements, specifically GOVERNING the SUBSEQUENT treatment of items initially recognised WITHIN Other Comprehensive Income.
4
What Unmodified IFRS 9 Allows – the FVOCI No-Recycling Election for Equity Instruments
A genuine "parking" of gains/losses that never reach the income statement
UNDER unmodified IFRS 9, an entity may IRREVOCABLY ELECT to measure CERTAIN equity investments at FAIR VALUE THROUGH OTHER COMPREHENSIVE INCOME (FVOCI) – with a genuinely DISTINCTIVE feature: fair value CHANGES on these instruments are NEVER RECYCLED to profit or loss, EVEN upon SALE or disposal of the investment. The CUMULATIVE gain or loss SIMPLY remains PERMANENTLY within equity (OFTEN transferred directly to retained earnings on disposal) – meaning the ENTIRE economic gain or loss on such an investment can, in EFFECT, NEVER touch the Statement of Income AT ALL.
5
THE MODIFICATION – Mandatory Eventual Recycling of All OCI Items
Closing off the "permanent parking" option entirely
Under THIS JMIS modification, ALL items initially recognised WITHIN Other Comprehensive Income – INCLUDING fair value changes on EQUITY instruments that would OTHERWISE qualify for the unmodified IFRS 9 no-recycling ELECTION – must EVENTUALLY be RECLASSIFIED to PROFIT OR LOSS upon DERECOGNITION, DISPOSAL, or SETTLEMENT. The "PERMANENT PARKING" outcome unmodified IFRS 9 permits for FVOCI equity instruments is SIMPLY NOT AVAILABLE under JMIS – EVERY OCI item, WITHOUT exception, EVENTUALLY flows through the Statement of Income.
6
Why the ASBJ Insisted on This Departure From IFRS
The income statement should eventually capture all economic performance
The ASBJ has LONG held that the Statement of Income should, OVER TIME, capture the FULL economic PERFORMANCE of an entity's activities – a PHILOSOPHY reflected THROUGHOUT J-GAAP itself (see, for example, how the companion ASBJ Statement No. 10 poster describes "OTHER SECURITIES" fair value CHANGES eventually recycling through profit or loss on disposal). PERMITTING certain gains/losses to bypass the income statement PERMANENTLY – as unmodified IFRS 9's FVOCI equity election ALLOWS – was considered INCOMPATIBLE with this LONG-STANDING Japanese accounting PHILOSOPHY, prompting the ASBJ to CLOSE OFF this specific option within JMIS.
7
Consistency With the Traditional Role of the Income Statement in Japanese Practice
A shared philosophy across J-GAAP and JMIS
This modification MIRRORS the SAME underlying philosophy already REFLECTED in J-GAAP's own OWN OCI-equivalent treatment (see the companion ASBJ Statement No. 25 and No. 10 posters) – CONSISTENT recycling of accumulated Valuation and Translation Adjustments through profit or loss upon a TRIGGERING event, RATHER than permitting SUCH items to bypass the Statement of Income INDEFINITELY.
8
Worked Example – an Equity Investment Sale Under JMIS vs Unmodified IFRS
The same sale, two very different profit or loss outcomes
Example: Selling an FVOCI-elected equity investment at a gain
A company holds an equity investment, previously electing FVOCI measurement, with ¥60,000,000 of cumulative unrealised gains recognised within OCI. The company sells the investment during the year.
Under JMIS, the ¥60,000,000 cumulative gain is RECLASSIFIED to PROFIT OR LOSS upon the sale – appearing as a gain in the CURRENT period's Statement of Income. Under UNMODIFIED IFRS 9, the SAME ¥60,000,000 would SIMPLY be TRANSFERRED directly WITHIN equity (e.g. to retained earnings), NEVER appearing in the Statement of Income AT ALL – a genuinely MATERIAL difference in REPORTED profit for the period of sale.
9
Worked Example – a Loss on Disposal, Recycled Under JMIS
The same principle applies symmetrically to losses
Example: Disposing of an investment with a cumulative unrealised loss
A company holds an FVOCI-elected equity investment with ¥25,000,000 of cumulative unrealised LOSSES recognised within OCI, and disposes of it during the year.
Under JMIS, the ¥25,000,000 cumulative LOSS is RECLASSIFIED to PROFIT OR LOSS upon disposal – REDUCING reported profit for the period – CONSISTENT with the SAME mandatory recycling principle applying SYMMETRICALLY to both gains AND losses.
10
Disclosure Requirements
What this modification requires
Amounts reclassified from OCI to profit or loss during the period, and the triggering events Cumulative OCI balances by component, prior to reclassification
11
Critical Judgments & Estimates
Where judgement matters most
SIGNIFICANT JUDGEMENTS
Identifying the correct triggering event for reclassification (disposal, derecognition, settlement)
SIGNIFICANT ESTIMATES
Generally minimal – the reclassified amount is the cumulative balance already recognised within OCI
12
Relationship to IAS/IFRS
Comparison – JMIS (as modified) vs unmodified IFRS 9
FeatureJMIS (Modification No. 2)Unmodified IFRS 9
FVOCI equity instrument no-recycling electionNOT available – all OCI eventually recyclesAVAILABLE – an irrevocable election permitting permanent non-recycling
Other OCI components (e.g. FX translation, cash flow hedges)Recycle upon the relevant triggering eventAlso generally recycle – largely converged for these components
This modification's PRACTICAL impact is genuinely NARROW – it PRIMARILY affects the treatment of FVOCI-elected equity instruments specifically, since MOST other OCI components (foreign currency translation, cash flow hedges) ALREADY recycle under unmodified IFRS in the SAME way JMIS requires.

Quick-Reference Glossary
Recycling (reclassification)
The transfer of a cumulative gain or loss previously recognised in OCI into profit or loss upon a triggering event such as disposal.
FVOCI no-recycling election (unmodified IFRS 9)
An irrevocable IFRS 9 election permitting certain equity investments' fair value changes to never be reclassified to profit or loss, an option unavailable under JMIS.
