Presentation of Financial Statements
Presentation of Financial Statements is part of the Chinese Accounting Standards for Business Enterprises (ASBE).
1
Conceptual Framework Linkage
The general framework governing the primary statements
ASBE No. 30 establishes the GENERAL requirements for the PRESENTATION of FINANCIAL statements – GOVERNING structure, CONTENT, and MINIMUM line ITEMS across the FOUR primary STATEMENTS plus NOTES, BROADLY converged with IAS 1 internationally, WITH one NOTABLE presentation-STRUCTURE difference (Section 5).
2
Scope – the Complete Set of Financial Statements
Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Statement of Changes in Owners' Equity, Cash Flow Statement, and Notes
A COMPLETE set of FINANCIAL statements COMPRISES a BALANCE Sheet, an INCOME Statement, a STATEMENT of CHANGES in Owners' EQUITY, a CASH Flow STATEMENT, and ACCOMPANYING notes – CONSISTENT with IAS 1'S own REQUIRED set of PRIMARY statements internationally.
3
General Principles
Fair presentation, consistency, materiality, comparability
FINANCIAL statements must FAIRLY present the ENTERPRISE'S financial POSITION, performance, and CASH flows, APPLYING accounting POLICIES CONSISTENTLY, WITH materiality GUIDING the LEVEL of AGGREGATION and DISCLOSURE, and COMPARATIVE information PRESENTED for the PRIOR period, CONSISTENT with IAS 1'S own GENERAL principles internationally.
4
Balance Sheet – Classified Presentation
Current/non-current distinction
The BALANCE Sheet is PRESENTED using a CLASSIFIED structure, DISTINGUISHING CURRENT from NON-CURRENT assets and LIABILITIES – CONSISTENT with IAS 1'S own CLASSIFIED presentation APPROACH internationally (WITH an UNCLASSIFIED, liquidity-ORDERED presentation ALSO permitted WHERE it PROVIDES more RELIABLE and RELEVANT information, AS under IAS 1).
5
THE PRESENTATION DIFFERENCE – a Mandatory Single Income Statement
One combined statement, not a choice between one or two
ASBE No. 30 REQUIRES a SINGLE, combined INCOME Statement PRESENTING BOTH net PROFIT and OTHER comprehensive INCOME TOGETHER, ENDING in a "TOTAL comprehensive INCOME" figure – WHEREAS IAS 1 PERMITS a CHOICE BETWEEN this SAME single-STATEMENT approach OR presenting NET profit and OTHER comprehensive INCOME as TWO separate STATEMENTS. This is a NARROW, but GENUINE, presentation-level DIVERGENCE – ASBE MANDATES the single-STATEMENT format, RATHER than LEAVING it as an ELECTIVE choice.
6
Going Concern and Accrual Basis
The two foundational assumptions
FINANCIAL statements are PREPARED on the ASSUMPTION the ENTERPRISE is a GOING concern (UNLESS management INTENDS or is FORCED to LIQUIDATE or CEASE trading), and on the ACCRUAL basis of ACCOUNTING (RECOGNISING transactions WHEN they OCCUR, RATHER than WHEN cash is RECEIVED or PAID) – CONSISTENT with IAS 1'S own FOUNDATIONAL assumptions.
7
Offsetting Restrictions
Assets and liabilities, income and expenses, presented separately
ASSETS and LIABILITIES, and INCOME and EXPENSES, are NOT offset AGAINST each OTHER UNLESS SPECIFICALLY required or PERMITTED by another ASBE standard – CONSISTENT with IAS 1'S own OFFSETTING restriction internationally.
8
Worked Example – the Single-Statement Income Statement Structure
One combined statement ending in total comprehensive income
Example: Combining net profit and OCI in one statement
A company reports net profit of RMB 40,000,000 for the year, plus RMB 5,000,000 of foreign currency translation gains recognised within other comprehensive income.
The company presents BOTH figures WITHIN a SINGLE Income STATEMENT, ENDING in TOTAL comprehensive INCOME of RMB 40,000,000 + RMB 5,000,000 = RMB 45,000,000 – RATHER than PRESENTING net PROFIT and OCI as TWO separate statements (an OPTION IAS 1 would PERMIT, but ASBE does NOT).
9
Worked Example – Current vs Non-Current Classification
Splitting the Balance Sheet by expected settlement timing
Example: Classifying a long-term loan's current portion
A company has a 5-year bank loan, with RMB 8,000,000 due for repayment within the next 12 months and the remaining RMB 32,000,000 due thereafter.
The company CLASSIFIES RMB 8,000,000 as a CURRENT liability and RMB 32,000,000 as a NON-CURRENT liability, REFLECTING the CLASSIFIED Balance Sheet PRESENTATION this Standard REQUIRES.
