ASPE Section 1521

Balance Sheet
Balance Sheet is part of the Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE).
1
Conceptual Framework Linkage
A snapshot of financial position, under a deliberately retained older name
ASPE Section 1521 sets OUT the MINIMUM content and PRESENTATION requirements FOR the BALANCE Sheet – the STATEMENT presenting an ENTERPRISE'S assets, LIABILITIES, and OWNERS' equity AS of a SPECIFIC date. NOTABLY, ASPE RETAINS the TRADITIONAL "BALANCE Sheet" terminology THROUGHOUT, RATHER than the "STATEMENT of Financial POSITION" naming CONVENTION IFRS adopted, REFLECTING ASPE'S broader ROOTS in PRE-2011 Canadian GAAP TERMINOLOGY (see the COMPANION terminology DISCUSSION at the START of this LIBRARY'S ASPE series).
2
Scope – the Statement of Financial Position, Named "Balance Sheet"
One of the four required primary statements
This Section applies to the PRESENTATION of the BALANCE Sheet – ONE of the FOUR required PRIMARY statements COMPRISING a COMPLETE set of ASPE financial STATEMENTS, PRESENTING an ENTERPRISE'S financial POSITION at a SPECIFIC point in TIME.
3
Minimum Line Items
The essential categories a Balance Sheet must present
Cash, accounts receivable, inventories, investmentsProperty, plant, and equipment; intangible assets; goodwillAccounts payable, current portion of long-term debt, long-term debtShare capital, retained earnings, and other owners' equity components
4
Classified vs Unclassified Presentation
Current/non-current split, or an alternative liquidity-based order
MOST ASPE preparers USE a CLASSIFIED Balance SHEET – distinguishing CURRENT from NON-current assets and LIABILITIES per SECTION 1510 (see the COMPANION poster) – THOUGH an UNCLASSIFIED, liquidity-ORDERED presentation MAY instead be USED where it PROVIDES more RELIABLE and RELEVANT information (TYPICALLY relevant FOR certain FINANCIAL institutions or OTHER specialized ENTERPRISES).
5
Assets
Current and non-current categories, per their governing Sections
ASSETS are PRESENTED according TO their SPECIFIC governing ASPE Section – INVENTORIES per SECTION 3031, INVESTMENTS per SECTION 3051, PROPERTY, plant, AND equipment per SECTION 3061, GOODWILL and INTANGIBLE assets per SECTION 3064 – WITH the CURRENT/non-current DISTINCTION from Section 1510 APPLIED throughout.
6
Liabilities
Current and long-term obligations, clearly distinguished
LIABILITIES are PRESENTED distinguishing CURRENT from LONG-term obligations, WITH the CURRENT portion of LONG-term debt PRESENTED separately WITHIN current LIABILITIES – REFLECTING the CALLABLE debt and OTHER classification RULES discussed in Section 1510.
7
Owners' Equity Components
Share capital, contributed surplus, and retained earnings
OWNERS' equity COMPRISES share CAPITAL, contributed SURPLUS or OTHER reserves, and RETAINED earnings – SIGNIFICANTLY simpler THAN the EQUIVALENT IFRS equity SECTION, GIVEN ASPE'S absence OF any accumulated OTHER comprehensive INCOME reserve (see the COMPANION Section 1520 poster).
8
Retractable or Mandatorily Redeemable Shares – a Distinctive Presentation Item
A recurring feature of Canadian private-company tax planning arrangements
A GENUINELY distinctive Balance SHEET presentation issue ARISES with RETRACTABLE or MANDATORILY redeemable SHARES issued in a TAX planning ARRANGEMENT – COMMON in Canadian PRIVATE company STRUCTURES. WHERE the EFFECT of CLASSIFYING such SHARES as a FINANCIAL liability is CHARGED to RETAINED earnings, an ENTERPRISE must DISCLOSE, on the FACE of the BALANCE Sheet, the AMOUNT charged TO retained EARNINGS for ALL classes of SUCH shares – a SPECIFIC, EXPLICIT face-of-STATEMENT disclosure REQUIREMENT reflecting a GENUINELY common Canadian PRIVATE-enterprise fact PATTERN (see SECTION 3856 for the FULL financial INSTRUMENTS treatment).
9
Worked Example – a Classified Balance Sheet Structure
The conventional current/non-current split
Example: A manufacturing company's Balance Sheet
A private manufacturer presents current assets of $4,200,000, non-current assets of $9,800,000, current liabilities of $2,100,000, long-term debt of $5,000,000, and owners' equity of $6,900,000.
TOTAL assets ($4,200,000 + $9,800,000 = $14,000,000) EQUAL total LIABILITIES and OWNERS' equity ($2,100,000 + $5,000,000 + $6,900,000 = $14,000,000), PRESENTED in the CONVENTIONAL classified BALANCE Sheet FORMAT.
10
Worked Example – Presenting Retractable Shares Charged to Retained Earnings
The explicit face-of-statement disclosure this Section requires
Example: A family business's tax-planning share structure
A private company has retractable preferred shares issued as part of a tax planning arrangement, classified as a financial liability under Section 3856, with $180,000 of the reclassification effect charged to retained earnings.
The COMPANY discloses, ON the FACE of the BALANCE Sheet, the $180,000 AMOUNT charged TO retained EARNINGS for THIS class of SHARES – a SPECIFIC, EXPLICIT disclosure this SECTION requires BEYOND the GENERAL retained EARNINGS presentation.

Critical Judgments & Estimates
Where judgment matters most
SIGNIFICANT JUDGMENTS
Whether a classified or unclassified presentation better serves users, given the enterprise's specific circumstances
SIGNIFICANT ESTIMATES
Generally minimal – this Section is primarily a presentation standard, with measurement governed by the underlying asset/liability-specific Sections
