Interim Financial Reporting
Interim Financial Reporting is part of the Chinese Accounting Standards for Business Enterprises (ASBE).
1
Conceptual Framework Linkage
Condensed reporting for periods shorter than a full year
ASBE No. 32 governs the MINIMUM content and PRINCIPLES for INTERIM financial REPORTS – CONDENSED financial STATEMENTS covering a PERIOD shorter than a FULL fiscal YEAR – CLOSELY converged with IAS 34 internationally, WITH China'S own LISTED-company reporting PRACTICE going BEYOND the standard'S own minimum REQUIREMENTS (Section 6).
2
Scope – Periods Shorter Than a Full Fiscal Year
Quarterly and half-year reports
This Standard applies to INTERIM financial REPORTS – TYPICALLY quarterly or HALF-yearly reports PREPARED by LISTED companies BETWEEN their FULL annual reporting DATES.
3
Minimum Content of an Interim Report
Condensed statements and selected explanatory notes
A COMPLIANT interim REPORT includes a CONDENSED Balance SHEET, condensed INCOME Statement, condensed STATEMENT of CHANGES in owners' EQUITY, condensed CASH Flow STATEMENT, and SELECTED explanatory NOTES – CONSISTENT with IAS 34'S own minimum CONTENT requirements internationally.
4
Same Accounting Policies as the Annual Financial Statements
Consistency across interim and annual reporting
An ENTERPRISE applies the SAME accounting POLICIES in its INTERIM financial STATEMENTS as it APPLIES in its ANNUAL financial STATEMENTS – CONSISTENT with IAS 34'S own "SAME accounting POLICIES" principle internationally.
5
Estimated Annual Effective Tax Rate for Interim Tax
A practical simplification for interim-period tax provisions
FOR income TAX purposes, an ENTERPRISE ESTIMATES an ANNUAL effective TAX rate (BASED on full-YEAR projected RESULTS) and APPLIES that ESTIMATED rate to the INTERIM period's OWN pre-tax PROFIT, RATHER than PERFORMING a FULL, discrete DEFERRED tax COMPUTATION for the SHORTER interim PERIOD alone – CONSISTENT with IAS 34'S own approach internationally.
6
China's Quarterly Reporting Cadence – a Practical Contrast
A fuller reporting rhythm than some other major jurisdictions
CHINESE listed COMPANIES (A-share LISTED enterprises) are REQUIRED to disclose QUARTERLY financial DATA – FIRST and THIRD quarter reports, ALONGSIDE half-YEAR and ANNUAL reports – MAINTAINING a FULLER, more FREQUENT interim REPORTING cadence in PRACTICE. THIS stands in a NOTABLE PRACTICAL contrast to JAPAN'S own 2024–2025 SHIFT away FROM mandatory FULL quarterly reporting TOWARD a REDUCED semi-annual REGIME (see the COMPANION ASBJ Statement No. 33/37 posters EARLIER in this SERIES) – a USEFUL illustration that JURISDICTIONS applying BROADLY similar INTERIM accounting PRINCIPLES can STILL differ MEANINGFULLY in PRACTICAL reporting FREQUENCY, a REGULATORY policy CHOICE rather than an ACCOUNTING-standard-level DIFFERENCE.
7
Materiality Assessed Relative to the Interim Period
A shorter measurement window changes the materiality baseline
MATERIALITY for INTERIM reporting PURPOSES is ASSESSED RELATIVE to the INTERIM period'S own FINANCIAL data, RATHER than the FULL annual PERIOD – an ITEM immaterial in the CONTEXT of a FULL year MAY still be MATERIAL WITHIN the SHORTER interim PERIOD'S own scale.
8
Worked Example – Applying the Estimated Annual Effective Tax Rate
A practical simplification for the condensed interim period
Example: Estimating interim tax expense using a projected annual rate
A company estimates its full-year effective tax rate at 22%, based on projected annual results. Interim (half-year) pre-tax profit is RMB 60,000,000.
The company recognises INTERIM tax expense of RMB 60,000,000 × 22% = RMB 13,200,000 – APPLYING the ESTIMATED annual EFFECTIVE rate to the INTERIM period's OWN pre-tax PROFIT.
9
Worked Example – a Condensed Interim Balance Sheet
Less detail than the full annual statement, but still meaningful
Example: A quarterly report's condensed presentation
A listed company prepares its Q1 quarterly report, presenting a condensed Balance Sheet with major line items but fewer subtotals and note disclosures than its full annual Balance Sheet.
The CONDENSED presentation still INCLUDES all MAJOR asset, LIABILITY, and EQUITY categories, WITH selected EXPLANATORY notes HIGHLIGHTING significant EVENTS and TRANSACTIONS since the LAST annual report – SUFFICIENT for USERS to UNDERSTAND material CHANGES WITHOUT the FULL annual level of DETAIL.

Disclosure Requirements
What ASBE No. 32 requires
Condensed primary financial statements for the interim periodSelected explanatory notes on significant events and transactions since the last annual reportStatement that the same accounting policies as the annual statements have been applied

The ACCOUNTING standard ITSELF is thoroughly CONVERGED – CHINA'S own REGULATORY reporting-FREQUENCY practice (QUARTERLY disclosure) is a SEPARATE, REGULATORY-level distinction, NOT an accounting-STANDARD divergence.
